Re-enlisting Won’t Be a Sure Thing After DADT Repealed

Gay and lesbian troops who were discharged under “don’t ask, don’t tell” and want to return to the military will just have to reapply like everyone else. And that reality comes with drawbacks, according to the New York Times.

They will essentially be starting over, without the ranks they left with, or the jobs they once had.

Anyone seeking re-enlistment will face a physical fitness test, and some will be told they need waivers to get back in because of their age.

“I’ve been out six years, so my peers are way ahead of me in the promotion structure,” former linguist Jarrod Chlapowski told the Times. “It’s going to be a different Army than the one I left. And that’s a little intimidating.”
