President Obama Speaks to the HRC, Part 1
On October 10, President Barack Obama became the second sitting president to speak to the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) national convention.
He begins with a shout out to Portland’s Terry Bean and a humorous poke at himself: “It is a privilege to be here tonight to open for Lady GaGa.”
He aligns our struggle to the struggles for others to gain full rights of citizenship. Then, he outlines the details of fights for rights, fights to elect leaders who share our values and fights for victims of HIV/AIDS and finishes with “I’m here with you in that fight.”
For even as we face extraordinary challenges as a nation, we cannot, and we will not, put aside issues of basic equality.
