Portland police have arrested a man in connection with a bias crime they say occurred early Sunday morning.

According to police spokesman Pete Simpson, victim Andrew Dempsey-Gluth, 30, was walking in Southwest Portland’s Lovejoy Park with his partner just before 5:00 a.m. when two men approached and reportedly yelled antigay slurs.

Simpson says the couple left the area but encountered one of the men again on a nearby balcony. After the victim told the man, identified as Dillan Joseph Cashman, 21, that his comments in the park had been inappropriate, the man went out into the street and assaulted Dempsey-Gluth.

The suspect faces charges of second-degree intimidation and fourth-degree assault.
