Jim Carrey’s Gay Flick Moved to July

By Michelle Garcia, The Advocate

After many hiccups in its release schedule, Jim Carrey’s latest flick, about a con man who falls in love with his cell mate (played by Ewan McGregor), I Love You Phillip Morris, will hit theaters this summer.

Phillip Morris was originally slated for an April 30 release, but it’s now scheduled for a limited opening July 30 and will expand to more theaters August 6. According to Variety, it has been “plagued with distribution distress since premiering at [the Sundance Film Festival] in 2009, largely because of the film’s challenging subject matter.”

Comments:

Boston: Can’t wait to see this future Oscar winner–Ace Ventura meets Shawshank Redemption meets Brokeback Mountain…

Los Angeles: Wow, more straights playing gay characters. Surprise, surprise. Gay people should give their gay dollars to gay productions, not these full-time pussyeating career actors who try and cash in on a minority segment. BUT leave it to the gays to flock to anyone or anything that throws them a few scraps.

South Dakota: Most of us would rather a ‘gay’ actor play us in movies I suspect. Another way to think about it is that we do not need to convince ourselves of our status but those who do debase. I watched Ewan McGregor on an evening talk show speaking about his part in this movie. As I recall he is a Scotsman. When asked about the ‘kissing’ part of the movie and one could hear snickering from the audience, McGregor without hesitation or sarcasm said “love was love.” He commented that even though he was straight, he felt from this role that discrimination was wrong and certainly gave his support for our fight. That is a good thing. People in general can be so shallow and listening to someone with his platform is a step-forward. His [ and Jim Carrey's] popularity ‘may’ help in our struggle.

Houston: “The challenging subject matter” is a couple of gay sex scenes. But really its mainly one where Jim Carey is riding some random guy. Also its pretty open about it being a gay love story, while Brokeback Mountain only slowly came to such a conclusion. It is a REALLY strange movie, but what is more strange is that it is a true story. It has been released everywhere in the world with a standard ad campaign, except America, the country of origin. I think its hard for them to find distributors solely because it is the first hollywood love story. I have a hard time saying Brokeback can equate, because it was more subdued. Like seriously the sex scene in Philip Morris is pretty much what you would see in a R movie between a man and a woman.
