Houston, Texas – the fourth largest city in the country – has elected an openly lesbian woman to be its next mayor.
HOUSTON (AP) — Annise Parker has an unbeatable lead over Gene Locke in Houston’s hotly contested mayoral election, meaning she will become the city’s first openly gay mayor. Her rival, former city attorney Gene Locke, was pitching to become the city’s second black mayor.
Houston now becomes the largest city in the U.S. with an openly gay mayor, surpassing Portland and current mayor Sam Adams.
