Drew Gilpin Faust, the president of Harvard University, said that ROTC (Reserve Officers’ Training Corps) would not be welcome to the campus until after the “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy is repealed.

As reported in The Advocate:  Faust spoke with The Boston Globe on Wednesday, the day after the U.S. Senate failed to advance repeal of the discriminatory policy. She said that Harvard, which expelled ROTC four decades ago during the Vietnam War, looked forward to the opportunity to “regularize our relationship” with the military. That relationship came under scrutiny this past summer during the confirmation hearings of Supreme Court Justice Elena Kagan, a former dean of Harvard Law School.

“Harvard had expelled ROTC from campus in 1969, amid protests against the Vietnam War,” reported the Globe. “Today, Faust said, there is only one reason ROTC is barred from campus: The issue is ‘entirely linked to ‘don’t ask, don’t tell.’ ’ She said Harvard bars discrimination by all undergraduate groups.”
