The second major city to possibly have a queer mayor is Houston, Texas, where Annise Parker is currently running for the office.

Now for the part that surprised me: Houston is the fourth largest city in the nation. What?  I had no idea!

Anyway, Ms. Parker is a very serious contender for the Mayor of Houston. She has been elected to citywide office SIX times and currently serves as the City Controller.

Supporters are gearing for a tough race. This, according to Denis Dison of the Gay & Lesbian Victory Fund:

“She’s the most experienced, most well-known candidate in the race, but the anti-gay far right knows this too, so we fully expect them to use her sexual orientation to divide and distract the voters. We’re preparing for that.”

If elected, Annise will be the second LGBT Mayor of a major city. Portland Oregon is currently lead by Sam Adams, a gay man.
