Egyptian Club Officially Announces Closing on October 9

Submitted By: Fabulous Rob on August 12, 2010 2 Comments

Our pals over at QPDX have the full stoy here: http://qpdx.com/2010/08/the-e-room-last-surviving-local-dyke-bar-announces-closing/

But the skinny is:

Egyptian Club (E-Room) is closing on October 9. That will be the final party. The club will be open as usual until then.

Owners cite the high overhead, bad economy and low attendance as reasons for closing the “storied” dyke bar.

More Press:

Kathy Belge at the Examiner.

What do you think?

Ya know its pretty damn sad that this city that has so many lesbians in it can’t even support one womans bar, even if you couldn’t stand the smokyness or the dyke brawls, and sometimesa not so great music nights, it was the one place for a very long time that was a lesbian bar, and what is even more devistating is the fact not one person could of taken over to continue that place for all of those that bitched that there isn’t a good lesbian bar around, guess we have just can be non pro-active and complain, it is very dissappointing and unfortunate to say the least! Well I know that even the ol E-room wasn’t always the “place” to be for me I have always supported its owners efforts to try and bring some place for us, with its creativity and reinvention, I went opening night and she will be missed! Cheers and thankyou!

I would like to point out, that in spite of the boo-hooing statements about the economy, and about how hard it is to “keep (their) doors open”, that the bar has not actually closed. The owners have just changed the name to “Weird Bar” and made it “not a lesbian bar.”

So before you assume, as many will after reading these remarks, that lesbians have no money and have forced this business to close, be aware that somehow they are still remaining open, just in a different incarnation. Without even having won the lottery.

So those of us, hundreds of lesbians who flocked to what we thought was a closing party, were actually just helping to fund our further marginalization.

Maybe that was the miracle Kim was looking for.
