One Less Place in Fabulous Portland – The Eagle Underground Closes

Submitted By: FabulousRob on August 5, 2009 No Comment

The Portland Mercury reports that Karl Wilgus, owner of Casey’s and The Eagle Underground, gay bars in the Oldtown section of Portland, will be closing the Eagle Underground.

This is the Eagle that once perched in the Burnside Triangle, sharing a block with the Crystal Ballroom.

The email Wilgus sent is not specific about the fate of Casey’s, the “aboveground” brother of the fated Eagle. To make things even more cryptic, he signs the email “Karl Wilgus and
The Entire Eagle / Casey’s and now Scoreboard staff.”

Plans for a new bar? Sounds sporty.

The Eagle Underground will be open for the next two weekends only – Aug 8-9 and Aug 15-16. People are encouraged to drop by to say goodbye and perhaps share stories about the often notorious watering hole.

On a personal note, I look so much like Karl that his employees have approached me when I was in his bar. If for no other reason than I get to play all notorious, I hope Karl reopens a gay bar…
